What Are Shares?

Shares represent units of ownership in a company. When you buy shares, you own a small portion of that company’s assets and earnings. These units of ownership are commonly referred to as stocks, a term widely used in financial markets.

Shares vs Stocks: What’s the Difference?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference:

Shares refer to ownership in a specific company
Stocks refer to ownership across one or multiple companies

Think of a company’s stock as an entire cake, and each share as a slice of that cake. The more slices you own, the larger your ownership stake. Although the number of shares is limited, companies may issue additional shares or divide existing ones through stock splits.
